" to mark in a fitting manner those who have conferred honor upon their Alma Mater by distinguished scholarship and exemplary character "
Tau Beta Pi is the most prestigious and oldest national engineering honor society in the country.
The honor society is an association of primarily collegiate members and chapters whose purposes are to encourage and recognize superior scholarship and/or leadership achievement either in broad fields of education or in departmental fields at undergraduate and/or graduate levels.
Members are admitted based on their demonstration of academic achievement and exemplary character, evidenced through their personal integrity, breadth of interest, and charitable activity.
Tau Beta Pi Association was founded at Lehigh University in 1885 by Dr. Edward Higginson Williams, Jr.. The parent chapter, Alpha of Pennsylvania, existed alone until 1892 when Alpha of Michigan was founded at Michigan State Unviersity. Since the founding of Michigan Alpha Chapter, Tau Beta Pi has grown steadily; there are now collegiate chapters at 246 institutions, chartered alumni chapters in 44 cities and a total initiated membership of approximately 584,000.
In lieu of COVID protocols, Tau Bates were encouraged to recreate the Bent for our first ever Build-a-Bent Contest in Fall 2020. Many wonderfully creative submissions were received, but the two shown above were the winners of the contest.
